DSG and upgrades

Post by SteveKelly »

Well had our first caddy after 6 years with a touran. We have a 2014 caddy maxi life 1.6 and have been well impressed with the smoothness of ride and enjoyment of forever not changing gear on the school run with 4 kids.

Already planning on upgrading to a golf mk 6 steering wheel and retrofitting cruise control, as well as upgrading to a dab radio and enabling bluetooth.

So many jobs and so little time.gooimg to start with new rear seatbelt trim covers and a new rear console/grill.

Does anyone have any ideas of someone in the north east that I could employ to recode for the said steering wheel/cruise control/Bluetooth.

Many thanks

richard-martin.co.uk/ in Peterlee fitted and coded my mfsw and cruise.
Seemed like real enthusiasts, chatted to one of the the mechanics about his mk5 golf, and they run a Caddy.

Worth considering paddle shift, and if you go for one of the less desirable wheels you can recoup 70% of the cost selling your old wheel and airbag.

Oh yes - What tend to be the less desirable wheels in your experience?

I went for a mk5 Golf wheel, multi function, leather, paddle shift, and paid £210 with airbag. Sold the original for £200. (swcm and stalks were both around £35)
The desirable wheels are anything latest generation or anything that looks like it should be in a sports car.

Thanks for that - I can get a brand new mk6 golf MFSW with paddles and controller for £350 that was bought my someone but never used. Does that sound about right? I’m guessing then I’d need a cruise control stalk and slip ring from a mk6?

Not sure how good a price that is, I was doing it on the cheap so didn't look at new. You'll also need to check if your existing airbag will fit, if you need a different one they aren't cheap new or used.
You're best off having your access upgraded and reading the how to thread, maybe also search for my posts to see what questions I needed to ask when doing it like which airbags fit which wheel and how to tell which swcm was needed. You'll also find information on part numbers and compatibility on the ross-tech website.

Parts list is roughly:
Wheel
Airbag
Airbag loom
swcm (includes slipring. You'll need to check what is currently fitted to know what to buy)
stalks (come as a pair. It's possible to have cruise on the wheel not the stalks, but requires an aftermarket part)

Thanks for all this information - much appreciated.

The one I’ve seen to buy has the airbag included so I was hoping to sell my wheel and airbag as a one.

It all seems quite complex initially - I’ll see if I can get upgraded now. I need to get my head around it all before Saturday as that’s when I’m passing Leeds where the wheel and bag are.

I can see that the golf mk 7 wheel has the cruise button on the wheel, but I have them on stalk on my 2007 touran and probably used to and prefer that.

350 for both wheel and airbag new sounds like a bargain, air bags are 275. Old wheel and airbag should sell for 200.

Thanks for the advice totty - I think I may go for it and catch up with my understanding of the retrofit and what else I need later. (I’ve now asked to be upgraded on caddy2k so that should help once I can access more of the technical stuff.

So I’m heading down the country from Newcastle to the midlands to visit family via Leeds (to pick up the wheel). So I’m thinking of calling in at professional retrofits at Higham on the hill for a spot of advice.
